효율성의 관점에서 본 가상대학에 대한 비판적 검토 = A critical exploration of “Virtual University” from the point of view of educational effectiveness

The purpose of this article was to examine whether the virtual university will replace the traditional campus-based university and become the dominan Thigher educationalins titute by criticizing the attributes of the virtual university mentioned in variouss tudies. In addition, it was aimed at propos ing how to utilize the virtual educational environment in order for the campus-based university to enhance learning-teaching activities and keep playing the dominant role in the future higher education. Recently, virtual university has attracted a great amount of interests as the technologies did when appeared for the first time in the history. Most of the traditional campus-based universities have participated in constructing their own virtual university, as suming that the virtual university will prevail in the future higher education. This movement seemed to be based on the as sumptions that the virtual university would be a better educational environment than the traditional because of the distinct capabilities of the environment such as no physical barriers, various interactions, and learner-centered. Although the future higher education will be affected and changed by the virtual universities, it was predicted that the future higher education still require the campusequipped univers ities without physical facilities will exist and provide the opportunity for only the student who can’t attend the campus-based. This forecast was derived from the following discussions. First, the virtual campus could not enhance learning better than the real campus when the physical barriers were not a problem. Second, virtual universities would requires more time and efforts from instructors to keep the same level of the interaction between student and instructors as those at thereal campus. Third, iThas been reported thats tudents were less effective when they had more controls over the instructional activities. It was proposed that different perspectives needed for the campus-based univers ities to take advantage of the virtual university. The virtual university should be built inorder to remove the barriers to better learning and teaching, not the campus. The virtual university should also be introduced to help the campus - based instructional activities more effective and efficient. It was sugges ted that the virtual univers ity could be used as a tool for knowledge building activities, asynchronous learning support, new instructional methods, and a supplement of large classes. In conclusion, campus-based universities would be more effective and efficient by integrating the virtual university with a view to enhance campus-based learning and teaching activities, not replacing the ones, and will continue to prosper in the information age.
