This is about hypermedia, a new learning tool introduced with the recent development of computer and communications technologies. By interpreting the concepts of hypermedia and its potential as an educational medium and by analyzing issues related to the us e and the design of this electronic learning environment, this paper presents a design model for creating an optimum hypermedia learning environment. Hypermedia is an umbrella term describing a new computer- controlled interactive learning environment. In a narrow sense it is `` multimedia hypertext`` or `` hyper- multimedia``. It denotes a new way of organizing and representing information in a non- sequential way as opposed to the traditional linear approach to structuring and presenting information defined by paper- based text medium. It also refers that the units of information in a database contain various forms of information such as sounds and many other audio information, graphics , s till images , animated and/or dynamic visual images, in addition to textual information. There is no doubt that hypermedia has the potential to be an effective learning tool. By allowing user- directed navigation, a hypermedia learning environment allows multiple modes of information to be viewed non- sequentially depending on a learner``s individual needs or interests. Current literature on learning and learning theories supports the effectiveness of these features underlying hypermedia learning environment. However, hypermedia also presents problems as an effective learning tool. The problems of using hypermedia for learning can be understood in three respects : the problems of navigation, learner- control and the use of multimedia information. In addition to these problems , the effectiveness of hypermedia depends on situational factors including characteristics of the learner and the task. On the bas is of analyzing issues concerning the use of hypermedia for learning suggestions are being made to minimize the problems for the development of more instructionally sound hypermedia- based learning materials. In the design of the hypermedia learning environment, the designers should analyze learning objectives and the learner characteristics before considering the instructional strategies, the organization of the contents and delivery mechanisms to be us ed for meeting the goals. The inclusion of some navigational aids is a good way to help efficient navigation in the course of learning. Suggested navigation aids are the use of electronic organizational aids drawn from text- based technology, a graphical browser which is unique to hypertext. Dynamic diagram or video overview can also be an useful orientation or access mechanism to help navigation and learning in hypermedia learning environment. It is suggested that the inclusion of a record mechanism is also important for effective learning in hypermedia learning environment.
