While many computer-mediated coursewares for teaching and learning have been developed, their functionality and usability have deteriorated. The primary reason for problems with courseware usability is that software developers may not be applying usability testing in the process of software development. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the theoretical basis for usability testing in developing an effective computer-mediated courseware. The goal of usability testing is to discover problems and make recommendations to improve the utility of a product during software design and development. The dimensions of usability testing can be classified into the five general categories of: learnability; performance effectiveness; flexibility; error tolerance and system integrity; and user satisfaction. In the process of usability testing, evaluation experts consider the nature of users and tasks, tradeoffs supported by the iterative design paradigm, and real world constraints to effectively evaluate and improve computer-mediated courseware using different methods and data collection techniques. As the knowledge about usability testing grows, experts can choose more effective and efficient methods and techniques for usability testing to develope an effective computer-mediated courseware for teaching and learning.
