This study is to examine the relationship between sex role identity and self-esteem during late childhood and adoescence. 554 subjects from three grade levels…6th, 8th, 10th grades…were investigated by self-administered questionaire. The data were analyzed by using one-way, anova, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression.
The results showed that (1) both of boys and girls exhibited traditional sex typing. However, through age level, for boys, femininity types were increasing, while masculinity types were increasing for girls. (2) Boy's self-esteem were slightly higher than those of girls, and self-esteem lowered through increase of age level. (3) boy's and girl's sex typing had significant relationships with their self-esteem. Androgynous group exhibited the highest scores of self-esteem. But, for girls in 6th and 8th grades, masculinity group showed highest scores of self-esteem.
These findings are discussed in regard to sex differences in psychological well-being.
