It has been well known that infertile women experience not only emotional disturbances but also stresses from familial and social enviornments. The purpose of this study is to promote understanding about the effects of demographic variables and variables of the attitudes of family members on the psychiatirc symptoms which infertile women experience.
The subjects were 185 women with primary infertility who had visited the Infertility Clinic of Kyung Hee University Hospital from April 1987 to April 1990. Self-report questionnaires and Symptom Check List-90-Revision(SCL-90-R) were used as the survey instruments.
The results were as follows :
    1) The Demographic Variables :
In age distribution, the most frequent age group was thirties. The mean period of infertility was 2.49±1.54 years.
    2) The Variables of Attitudes of Family Members :
Most patients revealed that their husbands were cooperative(85.9%), their feelings toward husband were not specific(5.7%), they had not lived together with parents-in-law(81.7%), the concern of their parents-in-law and others within the family of husband were serious(above 50%), while the stress from the family of husband was trivial(71.9%).
    3) The Correlation Coefficients between Variables and Symptom Dimensions of the SCL-90-R :
The variable of infertile period was statistically significant (P<0.01) in proportion of its length in all 9 symptoms dimensions. The variable of ‘Cooperation of the husband’was significant(P<0.01) in 4 dimensions(Somatization, Depression, Hostility, Psychoticism) according to the degree of their indifference to treatment. The variable of ‘Stress from family of the husband’was significant in all 9 symptom dimensions in proportion to it's severity.
The variables which did not show any statistically significant correlations were age, occupation, residence, ‘living with parents-in-law’, ‘concern of parents-in-law’, ‘feeling toward husband’and ‘concern of others within the family of husband’. The variable of ‘concern of others within the family of husband’was significant in all but 2 dimensions(Somatization and Paranoid ideation) according to the degree of over-concern. But, since it had a significant correlation with the variable of ‘Stress from family of husband’, it revealed a significant correlation as the effect of the variable of ‘Stress from family of husband’. Therefore it had not a significance as an independent variable.
In conclusion, the author hypothesized that the variables of demographic data and the attitudes of family members will influence the manifestations of psychiatric symptoms in infertile women measured by SCL-90-R. It was identified that the psychiatric symptom complained by infertile women were increased according to the length of infertility, the severity of stress from the family of husband and husbands' concern for the treatment.
