Recently, many research has been performed about a self-regulated learning ability.
It is because the self-regulated learning ability including cognitive, emotional. and behavioral abilities will predict a learning performance more accurately than any other variables. Although the importance of the self-regulated learning ability has long been thought in our school education, a systematic research has not been performed.
The purpose of this study is to identify a concept and characteristics of the self-regulated learning ability in social education. Theoretical perspectives, concepts and components, domain-independent and domain-specific characteristics of the self-regulated learning ability, relationships with critical and creative thinking, and educational methods to improve the self-regulated learning ability in social studies education are presented.
A operant theory, a phenomenological theory, a social cognitive theory, a volitional theory, a Vygotskian theory, a constructive theory, and a metacognitive theory are presented as heretical perspectives explaining the self-regulated learning ability.
The self-regulated learning ability is defined as 'ability to improve learning performances using cognitive, emotional, and behavioral strategies independently'. and is regarded as composed of 3 components: cognitive, emotional, and environmental. ABS, it is regarded that the self -regulated ability has two characteristics, one domain-independent and the other domain-specific, and that as domain-specific knowledge increases, the self-regulated learning ability increases. And it is regarded that self-regulated learning ability, critical thinking ability, and creative thinking ability interact and develop together.
Cooperative learning method, self-instructional technique, personal/ cooperative project method are presented as the educational methods to improve the self-regulated learning ability in social studies education.
