다문화 교육의 개념과 사회과 적용에 따른 문제 = The Concept of Multiculural Education and Problems Acompanied with Its Adaption to Social Studies

국문 초록 (Abstract)

다문화 교육은 다양한 문화 집단에 속해 있는 서로 다른 사람들의 상호 이해와 평등관계를 중시하고, 인종, 성별, 학습능력, 언어적 배경, 종교적 차이 등 서로 다른 집단들의 문화가 동등하게 가치로운 것으로 인식하며, 학생들에게 자신이 속해 있지 않은 다른 문화에 대한 편견을 줄이고 다양한 문화를 올바로 이해시키려는 지식, 태도, 가치 교육을 뜻한다. 다문화 교육에 대한 논의는 미국에서 활발하게 전개되고 있으나, 이 개념의 영역은 광범위한 교육의 전 단계를 모두 포함하고 있으면서, 교과목에 구체적으로 적용된 개념 정의와 교수법의 개발은 미약하며 아직까지는 실질적인 교육 효과를 보지 못하고 있음이 문제가 되고 있다. 또한 사회과의 다문화 교육은 유럽 중심적 교육과정과 교과서의 역사 서술, 편협된 관점의 학습자료 등이 문제점으로 지적되고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Multicultural education looks at the many facets of diversity, and attempts to understand various cultural groups with their own point of view.. It is a concept supporting and maintaining one or more cultures, value systems, life styles, and languages. In multicultural education, students learn various cultures which are different from their own, and illuminate prejudice on other cultures. It implies that students respect cultures of minority groups and they learn to interact and communicate with people of different ethnic, gender, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds. The concept also underscores the influence of diverse cultures on a child's learning and the importance of teaching strategies. Teaching from the multicultural perspective means that teachers should provide students with opportunities to enhance their abilities to manage, interpret, .and to make decisions about cultures that are different from their own.
It is criticized that the discourse of multicultural education tends to be dispersive and to cover the wide range of educational process whereas the specific concept of it is yet fully developed. The multicultural education is supposed to be applied to each subject. Social studies is considered one of the most important subject for the implementation of multicultural education. However, it is pointed out that the Euro-centric explanation in world history textbooks and distorted educational materials are problematic_ Therefore, it is required to develop various teaching materials and methods which are appropriate to reflect diverse cultural perspectives.
