다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

This paper explores grammaticalization pheromena of a conditional marker, -ketun, that grammaticalized into a sentential end marker in Korean. According to historical data, -ketun was the primary marker of conditionality up to Middle Korean, which gradually lost its primacy to -umyen, the primary conditional marker in Modern Korean. Longitudinal frequency counts show mirror image token frequencies of these two markers. Focusing on the "aftermath of this grammaticalization war", we investigate the developments taken by the loser of the war, -ketun. It is actively acquiring new functions in discourse, e.g. a sentential end marker that signals 'reason' or 'cause'. This paper investigates various shades of meaning carried by -ketun and its variants that evolved from this peculiar grammaticalization phenomenon, and argues that such semantic and functional shifts are a result of subjectification and speaker's strategy to effectively engage the addressee and to seek confirmation of his or her opinion from the addressee.
