This study is about the changes in family in contemporary Korea. Dramatic changes of family are often considered as a family crisis or corruption of familism in a classical view of family. The family still exists, however, but with a different typology and function. Thus, this study tries to explore new images of family by examining family concept, family relationship, and family value and ideology in order to suggest a direction of family social work. The data were collected in Nov. and Dec. of 2000 from a systematically stratified sample of 850 college students in Seoul. The students defined the family as love sharing group by focusing on love and care than blood relation. Individual person seemed more valued than the family as a whole in perception. Gender equality seemed to be the biggist change. Emotional tie among family members was still emphasized. These changes certainly led to a birth of new ideology of familism. The study results suggested that the program development and policy formation in family social work should be prepared based on these changes and new familism.
