ADHD(Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder) is one of the most common mental disorders among children. It is characterized by problematic behaviors of inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The behaviors can be thought as common, however, a child who shows continuous difficulties in paying attention, in siting still, and in controlling his/her temper can be speculated as having ADHD. The importance of ADHD as a public health issue is based on the fact that the ADHD brings a variety psychosocial impairments, such as deterioration of child-parent relationship, family conflict, and low self-esteem. It can further lead to antisocial behaviors in adolescence and adulthood. Regardless of the importance, however, social work literature hasn`t paid enough attention to deal with problems of families with ADHD children. This paper explores a need for social work intervention and its strategy for families with ADHD children. For this purpose, previous studies examining the effectiveness of parent-focused therapeutic approaches for ADHD children are reviewed and their limitations are identified. Then, the paper proposes a system oriented approach in which family, school, and community work together as therapeutic alliances.
