This study reviews critically the existing debates on the midlife crisis, tries to make the diverse individual responses to the midlife crisis into different types, and identifies the psycho-social variables to lead to individual differences. Arranging the different individual experiences along the two axes of the social adaptability and the consciousness of psychological conflicts and wandering, the author shows the five different types of individual responses: 1)maturation; 2)slide; 3)reassessment; 4)stagnation; 5)crazies. This study also provides the basic criteria to discriminate the complex and diverse individual experiences for developing the individualized intervention.
