There has been variety of efforts to improve schools and teaching from diverse perspectives. Among them, the most dominant approach to improvement has been `the outside-in` approach. In this approach, educational scholars and researchers first conduct empirical research and then develop guidelines or practical suggestions for teachers to implement in their schools and classrooms. This approach has been called as `the RD & D` model of school improvement. However, the effectiveness of it in actually improving the quality of teaching and learning has been continuously questioned. As the result, alternative approaches which adopt different perspectives have been proposed and actively implemented in the improvement process. Common to most of them is the emphasis on the practitioners who work in schools and classrooms. In this studyd, the idea of teacher researcher and the method of action research are particularly highlighted among these `inside-in` approaches. Theoretical ideas that have influenced to the emergence of teacher researcher and action research are explained. The characteristics and procedures of action research are described and ourlined. The discourse of teacher researcher and action research as currently practiced in korea is identified. And finally an attempt to link the idea of `Su-shin`(修身) in Great Learning to those of teacher researcher and action research.
