Self-Esteem is what a person endows himself with his values and it is related to prediction of his success level in doing work.
Thus, Self-Esteem is influenced very much by parental child-rearing behaviors. Therefore the present study is undertaken to examine the influence of the parental child-rearing behaviors on Self-Esteem. This thesis is aimed the following facts:
1) parental child-rearing behaviors and children's Self -Esteem's correlation and
2) how the consistency-inconsistency of paternal child-rearing behaviors between maternal child-rearing behaviors influence children's self-esteem.
The dependent measure for parental child-rear ing behavior is Schaefer's 「Children's Reports of Parental Behavior: An Inventory」 and Cooper smith's 「Self-Esteem Inventory」. 180 subjects from fifth to sixth grades were chosen randomly from primary schools in Daegu City and Dalsung Gun.
In order to examine the data between child-rearing behavior and self-esteem, the correlation and one-way ANOVA were applied respectively.
The results of this research can be summarized as follows.
1) If children perceive that paternal child-rearing behavior is autonomous, they have high self-esteem, but children perceive that maternal child rearing behavior is autonomous, they have a little high self-esteem.
If children perceive that parental child-rearing behavior is controllable, they have a little low self-esteem.
If children perceive that parental child-rearing behavior is affectionate, they have high self-esteem. If children perceive that parental child-rearing behavior is hostile, they have low self-esteem.
2) In autonomous-control dimensions, if children perceive that parental child-rearing behavior is consistent, their self-esteem is high. In love-hostility dimensions, whether children perceive that parental child-rearing behavior is consistent or inconsistent, they have no influence on children's self-esteem.
