The purpose of this study is to investigate the trends in newspapers exposure of Korean under the rule of the Japanese Imperialism. To this aim, the paper examined the literacy and income level of Korean newspaper readers to explain the social characteristics of them and analyzed the course of transition in the circulation of domestic newspapers as well as the distribution of the foreign.
According to the analysis, most of readers were the men in the socio-economic vested right class and in major cities including Seoul. Therefore it could be said that readers under the rule of Japanese Imperialism were the typical audience of elite stage in the E-P-S curve. The tone and characteristics of the Korean daily newspapers at that period were influenced by and also influenced on these readers.
In 1910s some Korean had subscribed the organs of the Japanese colonial regime to acquire the necessary information for everyday life, employment and business etc.. Since the publication of Korean daily newspapers was permitted in 1920, Korean newspapers in 1920s had tried to carry out the role as Korean's newspapers even under the limit of colonial regime's control, and so had been subscribed by most korean readers. However Korean readers, as the duration of colonial rule became longer, had gradually taken a compromising attitude and granted the reality of colonial rule. And also as the Japanese colonial regimes's control of the press was gradually strengthened, the tenor of the Korean newspapers had gradually been moderate since late in 1920s, and actively become pro-Japanese in the latter half the 1930s. During this period, the number of readers had been much increased for Korean daily newspapers, the Japanese colonial regime's organs and Japanese newspapers in both domestic and Japan. But, the subscription rate for Japanese newspapers was comparatively much higher than Korean ones due to practical needs and interests. It could be concluded that the trends in newspapers exposure. of Korean under the rule of the Japanese Imperialism was the product which reflected social consciousness and ideas of the vested right class.
