국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 종교(성)을 다차원적 개념으로 간주하고 경험적으로 이를 평가해 보고자 하였다. 두 개 조사, 세 개 표본을 이용하여 서구에서 개발된 I/E종교성 척도의 요인 구조를 확인하고, I/E 차원간 관계, 그리고 1/E척도와 다른 종교성 및 기타 태도들과의 관계를 분석하였다. 분석 결과 우리의 상황에서는 서구의 Kirkpatrick 및 Gorsuch & McPherson의 I/E 요인 구조와는 다소 다른 양상을 보였다. 즉, E차원 가운데 하나(Ep)는 I차원에 부하되었고, Es만 독립적인 차원을 이루어, I/E 차원은 I와 Es두 개 차원으로 구분됨을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 요인구조는 우리의 문화적 상황을 반영하고 있는 것으로 논의되었다. 또한 I/E차원간 관계도 서구의 결과와는 달리 정적 관계를 보였고, I/E와 다른 종교성 및 기타 태도들과의 관계도 정도의 문제이지 본질적 차이는 아니라는 점이 파악되었다. 오히려 서구에서와는 달리 I종교성이 Es에 비해 더 종교적 편견과 관계가 높은 점을 고려한다면 I/E종교성을 건강하고 성숙된 종교성과 불건강하고 미성숙된 종교성으로 구분하는 서구의 가치관이 우리의 상황에서는 들어맞지 않음이 확인되었다. 그리고 다양한 종교성 차원들은 본 연구에 포함된 다양한 태도 변수들에 상이한 유형의 효과를 미치는 점으로 미루어보아 종교성에 대한 다차원적 접근이 바람직하다고 볼 수 있다. 다양한 종교성 차원들 가운데 응답자들의 태도를 설명하는데 특히 유효한 설명력을 가진 종교성 차원은 신봉종교와 I/E종교성, 신앙 열성도, 종교의 중요성, 그리고 종교적 지원 변인이었다.

This study evaluates the multidimensional measures of religiosity. Based on the analysis of two data sets with three samples, this study attempts to confirm the factor structure of an I/E religiosity measure which was identified in the Western culture, to analyze the relationship between the I/E dimensions and other religiosity measures, and to test the association of religious dimensions with other attitude variables. The results of analysis showed different factor structure from the Gorsuch & McPherson’s I/E measure. Three samples confirmed two factors (I/Ep & Es) rather than three dimensions(l, Ep, & Es). It was discussed that this reflected our cultural background with this-world orientation. In addition, unlike the Western culture in which I/E dimensions showed negative relationships, the relationships between I/E religious dimensions appeared to be positive. In the same context, it was found that the associations between religiosity and other attitude variables were the problem of degree, rather than that of attributes. Considered that l-religiosity showed stronger religious prejudice in Korean samples(in Western samples the reversed relationship found), the distinction of I/E religiosity as healthy/mature vs unhealthy/immature by the Western culture may not be appIied to this oriental society. In addition, from the fact that a variety of religiosity variables included in this study had showed different patterns of effects on multitude of attitude variables, it could be inferred that the multidimensional approach of religiosity would be desirable. Of the effective religiosity variables, the variables of religious affiliation, Intrinsic/Extrinsic religiosity, religious commitment, religious importance, and religious support could be recommended for the prospective studies in this area.
