This study analyzes the relationship between NGO organizational characteristics and the acquisition of financial support, focusing on the influence of organizational size, age, and legitimacy. The study is based on an analysis of data for 532 NGOs which applied for funding under the 「Governmental Support Program for NGOs」operated by the Ministry of Government Administration and Home Affairs, from 1991 to 2001. Statistical analyses are performed involving chi-square, t-test, F-test and OLS regression. The results of the analysis are as follow. First, regarding general characteristics of NGOs: ⑴ Most NGOs have the purpose of carrying out comprehensive programs or volunteer activities. ⑵ There are twice as many corporations as non-corporations. ⑶ The average age of organizations is 12.5 years. ⑷ The median number of members in organizations is 15 thousand people, with five staff members, and an annual budge of 200 million won. Second, there are differences among numbers of staff, corporations (or not), annual budgets and the age of organizations when comparing organization selected for funding and those that were not selected. Third, the number of staff members and the annual budget significantly influence the size of financial support. These results indicate that size and age of organization are critical in determining whether support is given.
