Although the discovery of the Mahan settlements has been dramatically increasing, few attempts have been made on the distribution and chronologies of them, which are the fundamental works in archaeology. The purpose of this essay is to provide the chronological frameworks of the Mahan settlements found in the Honam province, which is based on the spatial distributions of the houses and the analyses of ceramic pots recovered. The Mahan settlements in the Honam province were divided into the four areas: the west coast of the Chonbuk province, the upper reaches of the Youngsan river, the lower reaches of the Youngsan river, the Posung river basin, and the upper reaches of the Sumjin river. The analyses show that the Mahan settlements, dating from the 2nd century BC to the 6th century AD, can be divided into the four phases and that those found in the Chonbuk province were discarded earlier than those found in the other areas. In other words, the settlements in the Chonbuk province were abandoned at least by the middle 4th century AD and those in other areas continued to exist until the early 6th century AD. Further, the analyses indicate that, based on the structures and shapes of the houses and artifacts recovered, there were the spatial differences between the plain area of the west and the mountainous area of the east in the Honam province, impling the political and/or cultural differences between the two areas.
