This study examined parents child rearing stress level relating to children diagnosed with autism at a hospital. Also, the researcher investigate parents stressors in the severity of autistic characteristics in their children.
Sixty subjects for the study were recruited mainly from the pervasive developmental disorder clinics of five big cities in Korea.
The parents of children with autism completed individually an Autistic Child Rearins Stress Questionnaire. Comparisons were made of stressor scores with the results of the questionnaire.
The results indicated that the mothers were more stressful and distress in general than so to the fathers. The two groups resembled all together in their degree of stress in the therapeutic educational concerns.
High rates of parents stressors were found in the areas of autistic child's verbal communication disorder and interactional inability. These two problem areas were high degree of family disruption and parents stress.
Contrary to conventional marriage life, relatively higher stress scores were gained from the unpredicability of child's future and the uncertainties of the autistic behavior problems in the rearing process.
Furthermore, results revealed that our understanding of parents with autistic young children will be seriously deficient at long as we are unable properly to estimate the impact of duration of exposite to stressors on parents' behavior. This need in particularly critical in the analysis of chronic versus acute stressors.
The researcher suggested that the need for systematic longitudinal assessment of parents stress to establish a parent intervention program.
