This paper discusses the role and the function of prior knowledge on constructing knowledge including the review of prior knowledge and ill-structured problem solving strategies, and the applications of science education for young children. Children construct knowledge based on their phenomenal experinces in real life incorporated within prior knowledge. In Constructivist view, the learner's prior knowledge is a major factor determining learning outcome. But prior knowledge includes both misunderstanding and scientific concept. Without the appropriate education, it is conceivable that children's misunderstanding may actually interfere with rather than facilitate learning. Educators make an effort to replace children's misnderstanding by scientific concept.
