A religion is compelled to face a lot of problems in order to root and grow in a new place, in a strange cultural climate. The side that introduced a religion always has the difficulty of the tension between old and new one.
Zen Buddhist had been overcome the diffculty and created Chu'ngkyu(淸規) that is the chinese Vinaya. Chu'ngkyu(淸規) was the attempt born under this kind of difficulty in Chinese Buddhist. That is the work which reflects Zen Buddhism in China
Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規) is one of the Chu'ngkyu(淸規)s had been comfiiled in China. It had been comfiiled by Zen Buddhist Deukhui(德輝) in Won Dynasty(A.D. 1336) by Imperial command.
This thesis consists of 6 chapters in all.
In 1st chapter, the purpose, the ways of this thesis have been dealt with.
In 2nd chapter, the historical background of Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規) formation has been studied
In 3rd chapter, the trsnsition of generations before Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規) has been studied.
In 4th chapter, the organization and contents of Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規) have been studied.
In 5th chapter, the distinctive character of Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規) has been studied.
In 6th chapter, the conclusion is drawn.
Among these chapter, the 5th chapter has the greatest importance in this thesis because the distinctive character of Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規) has been studied in this chapter. My essential purpose of this thesis is the study of distinctive character of Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規)
The distinctive chatacters of Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規) are as follows.
The first chatacterone is that Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規) is had been the second Vinaya to Zen Buddhist in china.
In Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規) it is said that Chu'ngkyu(淸規) and Vinaya is not the same thing and is not different thing. So to speak, it is impossible that without Vinaya Chu'ngkyu(淸規) is unable to be maintained and that without Chu'ngkyr(淸規) Vinaya is unable to exist.
The second chatacter is that Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規) is the literature that could furnish infomation about Buddhist circumstances of those days.
Buddhism was influenced by Neo-Confucianism(新儒學) that springed up Song Dynasty. It had been took a serious view of filial piety and loyalty. And it had been advocacied the Explanations of ceremonies and music. Because Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規) was influenced by Neo-Confucianism, there much matters about the Explanations of ceremonies and music. And, for all that Buddhism is the thought free from worldly duty, there is discribed filial piety and royalty.
Besides Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規) exercised a great influence upon the Chu'ngkyu(淸規) of coming generations within China. but also the Chu'ngkyu(淸規) of outside nations for instance Korea and Japan.
From the above study, we can conclude that the Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規) which comfiiled by Zen Buddhist Deukhui(德輝) in Won(元) Dynasty(A.D. 1336) by Imperial command is a valuable literature in relative on the study of the ceremonies and thought of Chinese Zen Buddhism in that time. and that the Buddhism in Won(元) Dynasty had been influenced by Neo-Confucianism(新儒學) and that Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規) could furnish infomation about the relation of governmental power and religional authority.
It is my humble hope that the study on Chiksubaekzangchu'ngkyu(勅修百丈淸規) will make a small contribution toward Chinese Chu'ngkyu(淸規).
