Choosing a career is one of the most important developmental tasks of an individual, because being satisfied with one's career is directly related to personal happiness. Particularly, college students who are in the last stage of preparing for the world of work are really concerned about their career issues. Recent surveys of college students regarding their disturbing problems prove such an aspect. As a matter of fact, the problem students are most concerned about is career issue. However, many people regard that career guidance and counseling is necessary only for secondary school students. Conseqnently, not much attentiion is given to the college level career guidance and counseling.
In this paper, some of the career development and counseling theories, such as Trait and Tactor Theory. Person-Centered Therapy, Psychodynamic Theory. Developmental Theory, and Behavioral Theory, are studied to find a way applying to counseling college students for their career problems. These theories can serve as a guide for career counseling. Just as counseling theories provide a framework for the conceptualization of client problems, career development and counseling theory provides a framework for helping with client's career problems.
The two most common goals of career counseling are selection of a career and adjustment to a career. Particularly, the goals of career counseling for college students are helping to gain self-understanding through self-exploration., improving the understanding of the world of work, emphasizing affective aspect of the person, enhancing the understanding of the meaning of work, and promoting decision-making skills.
