교육학에 있어서 사례연구의 중요성 = Significance of A Qualitative Case Study in Education

국문 초록 (Abstract)

교육학은 일종의 응용과학으로서 실제교육은 물론 교육자체의 환경과 조직에 대한 연구가 빈번하게 이루어지고 있는데, 현실적인 문제를 해결하기 위한 선행연구로서 심층적인 사례연구를 필요로 하고 있다. 계량적인 연구에만 치중해온 우리의 현실에 비추어, 보다 전체적인 무제파악을 위한 사례연구 방법이 있다는 것을 강조하고 정책개발과 현실 파악을 위해서는 질적 연구의 공헌이 크다는 것을 강조하였다. 질적 사례연구의 정의, 사례연구를 위한 자료의 수집과정으로서의 인터뷰의 기법에서 주의해야 할 사항, 관찰연구의 기법, 그리고 기존의 개방된 문서로부터 자료의 수집 정리방법 등을 설명하였다. 방법논의 어려운 학문적 용어를 가능한 한 피하고 읽는 이로 하여금 평이하게 내용을 소화할 수 있도록 문안을 작성하는데 노력하였다. 이 논문은 사례연구의 모든 것을 기술한 것이 아니고 연구자가 가장 먼저 알아야 하는 부분에 대하여 쓴 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article aims at introducing a case study method in qualitative research in education for the scholars recently more being involved in the problem-solving researches and policy oriented studies. It is maintained in the discussions that the qualitative case study is a particularly suitable methodology for dealing with critical problems of practice and extending the knowledge base of various aspects of education today.
A case study approach is often the best methodology for addressing the questions that emerge in daily work life for thoughtful counselors, administrators, and instructors, in understanding the problems in order to improve practice. This article has been written to allow educators to design and carry out a problem-centered, situation-specific, qualitative case study.
The contents of this article are: a definition and concept of "case study" and methods for collecting qualitative data, including an effective interview, participant observations, and handling of the documents.
The disciplines of anthropology, history, psychology, and sociology have influenced case study research in education. Terminology, theory, and data gathering and analysis techniques from each of these disciplines are used by educators to study problems broadly related to teaching and learning. Case studies in education also vary in terms of their end-product. Some are little more than intensive descriptions of a program, event, or process. Such descriptions are useful in learning about unique or innovative situations and may form a data base for future research. Case studies that go beyond description are interpretative in nature. The researchers use the data to analyze, interpret, or theorize about the phenomenon. Finally, many case studies are evaluative in that they are undertaken to assess the merit of a particular practice or program. In reality, most case studies are a combination of description and interpretation, or description and evaluation.
The decision to use a case study design is dependent upon the matter of the problem being investigated. Decision is also contingent upon and understanding of the design's inherent strengths and weaknesses. With regard to the current educational situation in Korea, it is advisable to conduct a few case studies on the topics such as: (1) effective institutional managements in all levels of institutions; (2) academic strategy for higher education; (3) effective student recruitment; (4) globalizing the Korean education system; and (5) educational leadership in Korea.
