Jo Geuk-seon wrote a diary for 27 years, from the age of 15 to 41. His diaries are preserved as the 『Injae Diary (忍齋日錄)』 and the 『Yagok Diary (冶谷日錄)』. At the age of 15, he began studying under Lee Myung-jun and started keeping a diary after reading Min Gi-soo's diary, where he noted the practice of diary writing. Over time, Jo developed a systematic approach to maintaining his diary, and in the 『Yagok Diary』, each day included introductory remarks (凡例). These introductory remarks, a distinctive feature of Jo Geuk-seon's diary, are divided into three categories: study according to schedule (課例), carry out one’s work (應事), and entertain guests (應接).
An analysis of the frequency and content of Jo Geuk-seon’s entries, particularly those noting ‘I wrote a diary’ reveals that he often wrote retrospectively after several days had passed. The typical interval was between 5 to 7 days, though in some instances, diary entries were delayed by 1 to 2 months. The reason he was able to maintain accurate records despite these long delays is attributed to his use of introductory remarks, which allowed him to categorize daily events, enhancing his ability to recall them efficiently. It seems that he would initially note the titles of significant events and later expand them into full diary entries all at once.
For Jo Geuk-seon, keeping a diary was not only a way to document his scholarly progress, but it also aligned with his belief in building up good deeds (積善) to receive blessings. He believed that blessings and misfortunes came according to one's good or bad intentions. While the diary served to cultivate his scholarship, it was also a means to maintain a virtuous life to avoid illness and disaster. Furthermore, he used it as a form of bookkeeping, meticulously recording items he had received in order to repay them.
Through the diaries of Jo Geuk-seon, his younger brother Jo Gyeom-seon, Min Gi-soo, and 『Hyeon Eunsan's Diary(玄恩山日記)』(1521∼?), which spans 42 years, it can be understood that diaries of this period functioned not only as personal records but also as family records. Keeping a diary appears to have been a common practice during this time.
