지리적 관점에서의 혜초의 『왕오천축국전(往五天竺國傳)』 분석과 온라인 지도화 = Analysis and Online Mapping of Hyecho’s Wangocheonchukgukjeon from a Geographical View

Wangocheonchukgukjeon (Pilgrimage to the five regions of India) is the first travel essay in Korea written by Hyecho, who is considered to be the Korea’s first cosmopolitan. Wangocheonchukgukjeon contains vivid geographical description of India and the surrounding areas, so it has abundant geographical values, but the relevant research has not been implemented from a geographical point of view. For this reason, this paper attempted to take two geographical approaches. First, the text described in the Wangocheonchukgukjeon were extracted and classified as systematic geographical themes, Second, the geographical and geographic educational meanings of the extracted contents were analyzed. As a result, Hyecho’s text of Wangocheonchukgukjeon could be classified with the categories of systematic geography, such as culture (52.6%), politics (13.9%), economy (10.5%), location (11.2%), nature (6.5%), and society (5.3%). And it was found that it contains rich geographical meaning and geographic educational meaning. Subsequently, the geographic journeys of Hyecho’s Wangocheonchukgukjeon tried to be online mapped using Google Maps and its utilization was also evaluated. As a result, it was confirmed that the constructed online map emphasized the geographical meaning of the Wangocheonchukgukjeon in a efficient way of visualization and strengthened the utilization of the text geographically.
