악트 쉬드(Actes Sud) 한국어 문학 총서 발간의 의미 : 제도적 번역 지원과 출판사 총괄 기획의 효과 = Significance of Actes Sud's Korean Literature Series : Effects of Institutional Translation Support and Publisher’s General Planning

This study examines the significance of Korean literature series published by Acte Sud, a French literary publisher, from institutional translation support and the publisher’s general planning. Since the translation is essential to enter world markets, introducing Korean literature is being carried out in different stratgy from other cultural contents such as dramas, movies, and K-pop that spread based on digital platforms. The introduction of Korean literature to France in 1990s was a quantitive and qualitative achievement of the translation support policy. As a representative example, examining the general planning and achievement of Actes Sud provides an important reference in introducing Korean literature overseas as an original cultural content. This study intends to examine the significance of publishing a Korean literature series, especially on an institutional point of view. The first thing to look at is the meaning of the translation and publication support system. Actes Sud’s Korean literature series was started with supporting programs of Korea arts and culture promotion agency and Daesan cultural foundation. Translating through the official institution and related programs had led the publishing to the following events like invitation of Korean writers to France. The second thing to look at is the effect of general planning of publisher. Korean literature series was conceived by Actes Sud’s general planning that the publisher was in charge of selecting novels and its publication schedule. Actes Sud selected a small number of writers and focused on introducing their main works to give local readers an impression on Korean literature and writers and to increase their understanding on it. And the strategy worked well. Finally this study clarified the meaning of collaboration between Korean and local translators, and diagnosed the significance and limitations of it by arranging the translator’s point of view on their works. Paying attention to how Korean literature is accepted in the abroad publishing market is also a way to re-identify the characteristics of Korean literature from an outsider’s point of view. Therefore, this study is an attempt to expand the scope of research on the meaning and details of translation of Korean literature, which has only been carried on level of interpretation and translation.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 프랑스의 문학전문 출판사 악트 쉬드(Actes Sud)의 한국어 문학 총서 발간 의의를 번역지원의 제도적 측면과 출판사의 출간 기획 차원에서 살폈다. 한국문학의 해외 진출은 번역이라는 중간 과정이 필수적인 만큼 플랫폼을 기반으로 확산하는 드라마와 영화, 케이팝 등 다른 문화 콘텐츠와는 다른 노선과 전략을 통해 이루어지고 있다. 1990년대 프랑스어권의 한국문학 소개는 번역지원 제도의 양적, 질적으로 뚜렷한 성취이다. 그 대표 사례로서 악트 쉬드의 기획 방식과 성과를 살피는 일은 원천 콘텐츠로서의 한국문학의 향후 해외 소개 기획에 중요한 참고점을 제공한다. 이 논문은 특별히 제도적 측면에서 한국어 문학 총서 발간의 의의를 살피고자 했다. 첫째로 살핀 것은 번역출판 지원 프로그램의 의미이다. 악트 쉬드의 한국어 문학 총서는 한국문예진흥원과 대산문화재단의 출판지원 프로그램의 지원을 받아 출간되었다. 공식 기관과 관련 프로그램을 통한 번역 소개는 한국 작가를 현지로 초대해 행사를 진행하는 등 후속 교류를 자연스럽게 끌어내는 동력이 되었다. 둘째로 살핀 것은 출판사 총괄 기획의 효과이다. 한국어 문학 총서는 악트 쉬드 출판사가 그 작품 선정과 출간 기획을 총괄 담당하는 방식으로 이루어졌다. 악트 쉬드는 소수의 작가를 선별하여 그들의 주요 작품을 집중적으로 소개함으로써 현지 독자들에게 한국문학과 한국 작가에 대한 인상을 심어주고 이해도를 높이고자 했으며 이러한 전략은 주효했다. 마지막으로 이 논문은 한국인과 현지인 번역가 공동작업의 의미를 밝히고, 악트 쉬드 총서의 주요 번역가인 최윤과 파트릭 모뤼스의 번역관을 정리하여 그 의의와 한계를 진단하였다. 한국문학이 해외출판 시장수용에 주목하는 과정은 한국문학의 특질을 세계문학의 관점에서 객관적으로 접근을 시도하는 일이기도 하다. 따라서 이 논문은 한국문학 번역의 의의와 상세에 대하여 통･번역의 층위에서만 다루어왔던 기존 연구의 외연을 확장하는 시도이다.
