백용성 찬불가의 시대적 고찰

국문 초록 (Abstract)

백용성(白龍城, 1864~1940)은 조선말, 일제강점기에 걸친 전근대 시대에 활동하면서 향후 전개될 한국불교의 방향성에 결정적 영향을 미친 승려이 다. 본 연구는 이런 조선말·일제강점기를 가로지르는 한국 전근대사회의 변혁 속에서 백용성의 중도적 자세가 가지는 의미를 특히 그의 찬불가와 관련하여 살펴보는 것을 목표로 한다. 백용성의 전근대 시대에 대한 고민과 혜안은 다음과 같은 과정을 거쳐 서 형성되었다. 그는 생애 초반에 한국 전통불교의 계승자이자 수호자로서 본인의 수행과 증득, 그리고 보림(保任)에 힘썼다. 또한 백용성은 시대적 사명으로서 3·1운동에 참여하게 되었고, 이로 인한 투옥 과정에서 도시문 화의 발달과, 특히 기독교의 포교전략을 참조할 계기가 생겼다고 볼 수 있 다. 이는 백용성이 찬불가 이외에도 한글역경, 청소년포교, 부인선방, 독립 자금지원 등의 불교변혁가의 면모를 보이게 되는 계기가 되었다. 백용성이 서구문화를 적극적으로 받아들인 것은 어디까지나 불교적 가 치를 지향하기 위한 일로써 이는 세속의 활동에서도 진제(眞際)를 추구하 는 보살도의 실천적 모습이라 할 수 있다. 특히 백용성은 수행자로서 세 번의 깨달음, 마지막 대각(大覺), 그리고 오후보림(悟後保任)을 통한 상구보 리(上求菩提)를 실천했고, 이후 도심으로 나와 포교당의 설치 및 찬불가 창 작 등의 적극적인 포교활동을 전개하면서 하화중생(下化衆生)을 구현하였 다. 이렇게 백용성의 찬불가 창작은 그의 생애를 상구보리 하화중생의 중도적 보살도로 이해하는 근거를 제공해준다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article is about a historical study of Baek Yong-sung’s Buddhist Hymns. In order to understand the meaning of his Buddhist Hymns, it is necessary to study the historical and social positions of Baek Yong-sung during the Japanese colonial period in which he lived. The main purpose of this article is to study his motivations for Buddhist hymns and the meaning for Korean Buddhism. Baek Yong-sung’s insights and solutions for the Korean Buddhism at a particular time during the Japanese colonial period are; translation of Buddhist scriptures into Hangul, known as Korea’s own letters; Youth missionary on Buddhism; Establishing meditation centers in downtown; Sunday Buddhist Gatherings for a sermon; and etc. In order to run the above methods, it is critical to think about the cultural power which can highly affect people to have a keen interest in Buddhism, rather than other religions. For these reasons, Baek Yong-sung composed several Buddhist hymns although he is neither a professional musician nor a music composer. The reason why he had to compose Buddhist hymns himself was that he was well aware of the power of music that can move people and was able to actually carry out those ideas into concrete materials.
