문화 간 관계에 관한 이론적 전개 양상 = A Study on the Aspects of Theoretical Evolution of Intercultural Relations

This study is to summarize theoretical development aspects of inter-cultural relations, moved to the center of the Cultural Studies on in the age of migration unprecedented in history, through the framework of Acculturation by literature review methods. This study attempts a differentiated analyses in some respects. First, the relation of Globalization to Acculturation in the context of International Relations in addition to the traditional Anthropological and Sociological context is included.
Second, Multiculturalism is backdated to Cultural Relastivism as the philosophical origin of it and is expanded to the possibilities of Interculturalism as a futuristic alternative. Third, Cultural Hybridity is traced as a criticism of the perspectives of Western oriented modernity.
Research findings are as belows. First, theories of Globalization, Multiculturalism, and Interculturalism are evaluated as theoretically useful tools for strategic, practical tools advocating antiracism, the recognition of the coexistence of cultures, the emphasis on active interactions among cultures, respectively. Second, theories mentioned, however, have limitations that they are peculiar ways of self-understanding of the crisis of Western culture which enjoyed the dominant position of cultural identity for a long time, and that they hold the framework of modern imagination resolutely. Third, Hybrid culture, from the different space-time context stated above, is regarded as a possible theoretical tool explaining the peculiar types of acculturation in non-western societies.
The author, from this study, suggests that Korean society calls for broadening its multicultural discourse and looking deep into its cultural hybridity.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구의 목적은 역사상 유례없는 이주의 시대에 문화연구의 중심부로 옮겨온 문화의 뒤섞임 혹은 문화 간(間) 관계에 관한 이론적 전개 양상을 문화변용(acculturation)론이라는 큰 틀에서 문헌적 연구를 통해 정리하였다. 첫째, 종래 통용되던 문화인류학적, 사회학적 맥락에 더하여 국제관계론적 관점에서 세계화와 문화변용을 살폈다. 둘째, 다문화주의론에서는 그 철학적 연원인 문화상대주의로 논의를 소급하는 한편 상호문화주의의 미래 가능성을 모색하였다. 셋째, 문화변용론을 저류하는 근대 서구 중심적 관점에대한 문제제기로서 등장한 혼종문화론에서 탈근대적 가능성을 찾는 독자적 분석을 시도하였다. 연구 결과, 세계화론과 다문화주의론, 상호문화주의론은 각각 반인종주의, 문화 간 공존의 승인, 능동적 상호작용에 대한 강조를 통해 인류의 자유와 평등을 실현하기 위한 유용한 전략적, 실천적 가치를 갖는 것으로 평가하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이이론들은 근대 이후 지금까지 서구가 누려온 문화적 정체성의 중심적 지위의 약화 혹은해체의 위기에 대응하여 스스로를 납득시키기 위해 만들어낸 독특한 이해방식이면서 근대적 상상력의 틀 안에 완고하게 자리 잡고 있음을 확인하였다. 이런 시공간적 맥락과다른 관점에서 문화변용을 접근하는 혼종문화론은 비서구사회의 독특한 역사적 경험이만들어낸 문화변용을 설명하는 이론적 도구이자 탈근대의 가능성을 내포하는 것으로 평가하였다. 이 글에서 살펴본 문화변용의 이론들은 비서구적 역사 경험을 가진 우리사회의 다문화담론이 좀 더 폭을 넓히고 우리 문화 안의 혼종적 요소를 좀 더 깊이 들여다보게 하는 시사점을 준다.
