지도와 사회 = Maps, map making, and the society

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 지도에 담기는 사회적 의미를 지도의 본질 및 지도학의 동향이라는 두 측면에서 검토하였다. 글의 전반부는, 지도가 기호를 이용하여 공간을 나타낸 그림이라는 점에서, 기호학적 입장에서 기호의 기능 및 명시적인 의미와 함축적인 의미를 살펴보았다. 글의 후반부에서는 지도학의 발달과정을 검토하였으며, 과학적 지도학, 비판적 지도학, 최근 지도 제작의 민주화라는 세 흐름을 파악하고 그 사회적 의미를 살펴보았다. 주류 지도학에서 지도의 예술성과 사회적 쟁점에 대한 관심을 되찾을 필요성이 부각되었고, 고지도와 현대지도 모두 기호학 및 도상학적 연구와 의사지도에 대한 연구가 필요한 것으로 시사되었다.
