      Interest in narrative, particularly in the power of the story form to shape our conceptions of reality and education has grown steadily in the past three decades. It is now a global phenomenon that is clearly flourishing and enjoying a renaissance across the social and human sciences. However, despite its popularity, narrative inquiry does elicit some concerns and challenges, perhaps due to the difficulty of presenting a complex, layered, and dynamic reality. The purpose of our article is to delineate what narrative research entails and how it can contribute to enhancing research on education. We provide justification for the importance of stories in educational research, and explain why narrative inquiry is arts-based research. In doing so, we intend to undo some of the misunderstandings about narrative inquiry and encourage educational researchers to engage in arts-based narrative inquiry to enhance the field of education.
