다문화 교육(Multicultural Education)이 한국 교사 교육과정 개혁에 주는 시사점 = Implications for the Reform of Korean Teacher Education Based on Multicultural Education

The purpose of this study is to examine the suggestions of Korean teacher education and teacher education curriculum based on multicultural education. One of the most popular research areas in America nowadays is multicultural education. Multicultural education considers equal education and appropriate learning environments. Equal education goes beyond providing the same opportunities and resources for all students. Equal education means that the skills, talents, and experiences that all student bring to the classroom need to be considered valid starting points for further schooling. Appropriate learning environments imply that teacher should provide instruction with consideration to students` individual differences. To identify the suggestions for Korean teacher education, the researcher investigates meanings, historical development, curriculum models of multicultural education. Based on multicultural education, the suggestions for Korean teacher education and teacher education curriculum are below. First, the history of multicultural education showed that the reform of curriculum and its application occurred slowly, which were contrast to the reform of curriculum in Korea. For successful reform of curriculum, it should establish a continuous organization group of curriculum specialists for curriculum development successively. Second, multicultural education models tell the importance of self-reflection for changing a teacher`s attitude. Third, a teacher education program should include courses to teach practical skills for equal education, such as individualized teaching methods, individualized evaluation methods, curriculum development, and instructional design. Fourth, based on Goodwin`s model, the teacher apprenticeship is considered to include in Korean teacher education for improving teachers` profession. Fifth, teacher education program should introduce pre-service teachers individualized teaching methods within a classroom. Sixth, multicultural education provides a frame-work for the unification education of North and South Korea.
