사회적 자본이 도시경쟁력에 미치는 영향분석 = The Impact Analysis of Social Capital on Urban Competitiveness

The research focuses on the impact analysis of social capital on urban competitiveness. It examines the economic nature of urban competitiveness and underlines the link between social capital and urban competitiveness. Social capital is often defined as the possession of social relationships and membership in collectives, and as the resources that derive from these relationships and memberships. Despite the importance of social capital, treatment of social capital has not penetrated into the discussion of urban competitiveness. The paper seeks to add to the discussion by examining typical components of social capital, the nature and index of urban competitiveness, and the influence of social capital on urban competitiveness by the use of index variables.
Using correlation and regression analysis, we find that social capital influences urban competitiveness. More specifically, we find that the variables of knowledge-based environments, norms, and trust, are statistically significant at a 5% level of significance and considerably influenced urban competitiveness. The other explanatory variables, such as openness, network, and collective cooperation, are not statistically significant.
The research is not trying to provide a ‘definite diagnosis and forecast’ to the impact of social capital on urban competitiveness. The link between social capital and urban competitiveness needs to be analyzed and discussed more thoroughly. However, we believe that the quantitative analysis using extensive secondary data points to an important way for future analysis.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 도시경쟁력에 대한 사회적 자본의 영향분석에 초점을 둔다. 이 연구는 도시경쟁력의 경제적 성격을 검토하고 사회적 자본과 도시경쟁력의 연계성을 강조한다. 사회적 자본은 흔히 사회적 관계성의 소유, 집단멤버십, 그리고 이들 관계성이나 멤버십으로부터 기인하는 자원 등을 일컫는다. 사회적 자본의 중요성에도 불구하고, 사회적 자본은 도시경쟁력 논의에 제대로 다루어지지 못했다. 이 논문은 사회적 자본의 전형적인 구성요소를 검토하고, 도시경쟁력의 속성 및 지표검토, 그리고 지표변수를 활용하여 도시경쟁력에 대한 사회적 자본의 영향을 살펴본다.
상관분석 및 회귀분석을 이용하여 분석한 결과 사회적 자본은 도시경쟁력에 영향을 미친다는 것을 알 수 있다. 보다 구체적으로, 지식기반환경변수, 규범변수, 그리고 신뢰변수 등은 유의수준 5%에서 통계적으로 의미 있는 것으로 나타났고, 해당 변수들은 도시경쟁력에 상당한 영향을 미치고 있다. 개방성, 네트워크, 집단협력과 같은 설명변수들은 통계적으로 유의하지 않은 것으로 나타났다.
이 연구는 도시경쟁력에 대한 사회적 자본 영향에 대한 ‘어떤 명확한 진단 내지 예측’을 제공하고자 하는 것은 아니다. 사회적 자본과 도시경쟁력 간의 연계성은 보다 더 면밀히 분석되고 논의될 필요가 있다. 하지만, 광범위한 이차적 자료를 이용한 양적분석은 향후 연구에 중요한 토대로 보인다.
