초기경전의 한계와 의의 = The Limitations and Significance of the Pali-Nikaya

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 불교의 근본가르침과 정체성의 문제를 재고하는 차원에서 초기불교가 무엇인지를 다룬다. 특히, 경전을 통한 가르침을 파악하기 위해 초기경전의 역사적 위치와 실천적 입장을 논의한다. 먼저 역사적 위치를 조망하기 위해 초기경전의 결집과 한계 다룬다. 붓다의 입멸 후 진행된 결집의 한계에서는 1차 결집의 구성과 내용에 대한 학자들의 의견에 집중한다. 에띠엔 라모뜨(Etienne Lamotte), 프레비시(Charles S. Prebish), 올덴베르그(Oldenberg), 빈테르니츠(Winternitz), 미나예프(Minayeff), 듀트(Dutt), 푸생(Poussin), 드용(J.W. de Jong)의 의견들을 통해 1차 결집의 진위에 대한 문제가 지속되었음을 소개한다. 이 과정을 통해 1차 결집의 진위가 불분명하지만, 그 내용과 구성을 허구로 보는 것도 추론이라는 점을 강조한다. 두 번째인 초기불교의 실천과 의의에서는 여러 경전을 통해 붓다가 자신에 대한 믿음이 아니라 가르침에 대한 실천과 체험을 강조했다는 점을 부각한다. 초기불교의 붓다는 시대의 문제를 논한 것이 아니라 인간의 괴로움과 그 소멸에 대해 논했다. 따라서 초기불교 안에서는 결집의 진위여부보다 현재하는 괴로움으로부터 벗어나기 위해 그의 가르침을 실천하고 체험할 수 있는지의 여부가 더욱 중요하다. 초기불교는 가르침을 믿는 것이 아니라 실천을 통해 체험하는 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In an effort to reconsider the identity of Buddhism and its fundamental teachings, this study investigates what Early Buddhism is. In particular, to grasp the teachings based on scriptures, I discuss the historical significance and practice of the Pali-Nikaya. First of all, in order to present the historical significance of the Pali-Nikaya, I examined the Buddhist councils that were held to compile the Pali-Nikaya and their limitations. Regarding the limitations of the First Buddhist Council, held soon after the Buddha’s parinirvana, I focused on the different opinions of several scholars about the structure and content of the Council. I then proposed that the issue of authenticity of the First Buddhist Council has persisted based on the statements of: Etienne Lamotte, Charles S. Prebish, Hermann Oldenberg, Moriz Winternitz, Ivan Minayeff, Nalinaksha Dutt, La Vallee Poussin, and J. W. de Jong. Although these statements make the authenticity of the First Buddhist Council vague, I emphasize that to regard the Council’s content and structure as fiction is also no more than presumption.
Secondly, on the practice and significance of Early Buddhism, based on several different texts, I highlighted that the Buddha stressed not a belief in himself but the application and experiences of his teachings. The Buddha of Early Buddhism did not discuss the secular issues of his time but discussed human suffering and its cessation. Therefore, in the paradigm of Early Buddhism, it is more important to put the teachings into practice and experience them than to speculate on the authenticity or validity of the Buddhist councils. Early Buddhism is not something to believe in but something to embody through one’s practices.
