Ⅰ. Research Problems
The determinants of media performance has been the subject of media studies. But the controversial topic has not been studied systematically.
This paper tries to bring together societal and structural constraints of press with media products in Korea. This Paper shows that :
ⅰ) Under relations among the three major structural forces, social issues, state power and structural position of media, media performance is structurally constrained.
ⅱ) Under certain conditions, media have relative autonomy but this is a product determined by structural limitations of the press.
Ⅱ. Method
Independent variables in this research are the characteristics of social issues, the control of state power and the structural position of media.

Each variable is divided as follows ;
(1) social issues ; ⅰ) Improvement of the present social structure
ⅱ) The legitimacy crisis of the state
ⅲ) National security
ⅳ) Anti-America(Anti-Imperialism)
(2) Control of State : Frequencies and intensity of control
(3) Structural position of media : privately owned (commercials) and state-owned one as the type of ownership
Dependent variables are the uniformity and diversity of news (content and form) Ⅲ. Finding
Generally, it can be summerized the news as media product is a negotiated one which is economically and politically constrained by the patterns of social issues, state power and structural position of media.
First, the direct control of state power have the primary forces of determination of news in Korea. It shows that Korean press has been structurally constrained by state power regardless of the types of the media ownership.
According to the characteristics of social issues and the structural location of media, media have relative autonomy in the limited range.
Especially this finding demonstrates ;
First, under the issues of improvement of social structure and legitimacy crisis, positional distance between different types of the press ownership is clearly shown. The commercial press show more relative autonomy than the state-owned ones.
Second, under the issue of national security (dominant ideology-related issue), regardless of types of the ownership, Korean press show the same pattern of media performance.
Consequently the relative autonomy of media is a negotiated product resulted from various conflicts of structural constraints.
