미국 다문화 정책이 한국 다문화 사회통합 정책과 다문화교육 개선에 주는 시사점

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The present study aims to investigate how multiculturalism and policies in the US have been evolving to find out what they imply and suggest for the Korean society which is now rapidly changing into a multicultural society. In this endeavor, the author of this study first reviews the multicultural history and major US policies. Then introduces several multicultural programs offered in C City in MA, the US. Especially for this second part of study, the author conducted a series of interviews with three local American professionals who are familiar with those programs in C City. As a result of this study, three major suggestions on the operation of proper multicultural policies stand out. First, the change of assimilation-based policy model to multiculturalism-based policy model. second, the implementation of official multicultural education for all of society members including main stream people, and third, the development of effective support programs for immigrants. First and foremost, in order to advance to a better multiculturall society, it was pointed out that changing consciousness toward diversity was urgently needed. It was also necessary to improve and enhance overall bureaucratic system in a practical way.
