이주노동자의 대인 커뮤니케이션 및 미디어 이용이 문화적응 스트레스에 미치는 영향 = The Effects of Interpersonal Communication and Korean Media Consumption on Acculturative Stress Among Migrants Workers in Korea

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study explored the role of individuals' communication activities in their acculturation processes among migrant workers in Korea. Specifically, this study examined how their patterns of interpersonal communication and use of various types of media affect their acculturative stress (i.e., culture shock, a sense of discrimination, homesickness, and a sense of insecurity). Surveys were administered to 235 migrant workers from various Asian countries. The data showed that viewing Korean TV programming decreased culture shock, whereas the viewing increased homesickness. Using Korean Websites and interpersonal communication with Korean people were found to increase a sense of insecurity, whereas viewing Korean TV programming and interpersonal communication with people from other countries were found to decrease the sense of insecurity. Additionally, this study explored possibly different effects of various types of TV programs. The data revealed significant relationships between acculturative stress and viewing of specific program types such as news, drama, and sports. Consequently, implications of the findings were discussed.
