As the result of the excavations on Guknaeseong, the one of the ancient capital of Koguryo, lotus flower designed roof-end tiles were found and collected from two types of sites. The lotus flower designed roof-end tiles were found in tomb remains and also in castle town remains. After examine these roof tiles from these two separate sites, these two sites show different design types and colors of roof tiles. Roof tiles from the tomb remains mostly show the flower design with divided line on grey-blue tone, whereas castle sites mostly show this design without any divided line on reddish roof tiles. These differences could be made from the different time of making and also the different use of these tiles. But this thesis is mainly focused on the roof-end tiles with line divided lotus flower design which is mostly found on tomb remains to review the morphological and chronological changes of the lotus flower design.
When the leaves and ovary part of the flowers were described, the lotus flower designed roof-end tiles from Koguryo period were printed in not a flat way but a way of distinctive relief. This must be related to the intention of making this lotus flower designed roof-end tile; how to arrange this flower design on the tile in a certain composition.
After reviewing the designs of lotus flower in the tiles concerning the composition, it is found that these lotus flowers don't have the shape of front looking petal type but side looking bud type. This bud type flower design shows that 6 or 8 each individual lotus buds are described on the roof-end tiles whereas petal type design shows 6 or 8 petals surrounding its ovary. In this bud type lotus flower design has hemispherical form of common ovary on the center of tile for each bud and on this common ovary equivalent spots to the number of buds are also described.
These lotus buds can be divided in to two type of shape; ginkgo net type and boat type. Ginkgo type is preceded boat type and the designs in the buds were changed from Y looking designs to three rising lines. Two rising lines on both side from these three rising lines moves to the outside of the flower design and finally becomes the edge-line of lotus bud.
According to these changes, the varieslotus flower designed roof-end tiles from Taewangreung tomb can be chronologically classified as A type→B type→C type→(DㆍEㆍG type)→F type. A, B, C types which have Ginkgo net types seem to be popular before the transfer of the capital to Pyeongyang and boat types like D, E, G, and F types seem to be popular after this transfer of the capital.
As the various design types of roof tiles can be seen from one tomb site, these various tiles are considered to have been used during repairing processes and this also shows that this tomb was maintained with its importance in relatively longer period comparing to other tombs.
The character of Koguryo lotus flower designed roof-end tiles is to describe its bud in a realistic way, but its form and style were changed as time passes. The rising lines on lotus bud had been getting simplified and finally disappeared. The shapes of the buds were also changed from Ginkgonet type to boat type. In some tiles, lotus bud style design was changed to line. With these modifications, various ovary styles were also made.
After reviewing all the design changes, we can think that the shape of lotus flower, rising lines on lotus bud, ovary, changes of dividing lines and border lines are important factors determining chronological trends.
