대학진학 첫 세대의 특성과 학습경험 분석 = The Characteristics and College Experiences of First-Generation College Students

The characteristics and college experiences of first-generation college students have been examined in order to address implications for Korean higher education programs. This study employed a national sample of 1,880 students attending 13 universities in 2009. It was found that first-generation college students came from families with lower incomes and had lower levels of engagement in college activities than peers whose parents had completed a bachelor's degree or above. The result also showed that first-generation college students were less likely to develop student outcomes, and were not satisfied with college education than second-generation college students. It was suggested that educators should consider ways to encourage first-generation college students to engage in the wide range of academic activities. Campus interventions offer many opportunities for first-generation students to develop academic ability. And Extracurricular or peer involvement may expose first-generation students to participate fully in the college experience. Then, universities can help first-generation students gain their desired educational outcomes of college.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 대학진학 첫 세대 대학생(First-generation college students)의 특성과 학습경험 을 부모 중 한 명 이상이 대학 졸업자인 동료 학생과 비교하여 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 전 국 4년제 종합대학 12개교에 재학 중인 2, 3, 4학년 학생을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 총 1,880명의 응답을 분석 자료로 사용하였다. 연구 결과에 의하면 대학진학 첫 세대는 다 른 학생과 비교하였을 때 낮은 소득수준의 가정 출신이며, 나이가 많고, 성적이 낮은 편이 고, 졸업 후 진학을 덜 고려하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 대학진학 첫 세대는 교육적 활동에 덜 참여하는 것으로 나타났다. 학습 성과 중 고차적 사고능력, 의사소통능력 등에서 대학교 육이 그들의 성장을 돕는데 충분히 기여하지 못하고 있다고 인식하고 있으며, 대학교육에 대한 만족도가 낮은 경향이었다. 대학에서는 이제까지 간과되어온 대학 구성원인 대학진학 첫 세대에 대한 관심을 제고하고, 대학진학 첫 세대가 교육적 활동에 적극적으로 참여하도 록 이들에게 필요한 교육적 환경을 제공하고자 노력해야 할 것이다.
