‘The Application of Grammar Knowledge’ is meaningful in that grammar knowledge is redescribed so that learners can use it productively and strategically. This study, based on this perspective, takes ‘the genre approach’, and investigates the functions of ‘-(ta)nun kesita’ in newspaper texts. This form is one of the linguistic expressions which make newspaper texts as ‘newspaper-like texts’. Therefore, we can expect that if its functions are uncovered, we can interpret and explain writers' intentions, namely ‘subjectivity’ reflected in the choice of that form. The form ‘-(ta)nun kesita’ plays a role to add interpretative commentaries to its preceding sentence by putting it into other words. It thus serves as a coherence device that links the meanings of those two sentences closely. Especially, the form ‘-(ta)nun kesita’ contains the form ‘-tanun (the condensed form of ‘-tako hanun’ functioning as a citation device)’ in it, and hence it reveals more of a less involved and impersonal mood than the form ‘-nun kesita’
