진정성에 대한 고찰 = A Review of Authenticity

The purpose of this study was to present the concept of authenticity and to discuss its clinical implications. Authenticity refers to the understanding of one`s true self and being accordingly, and historically it has been cherished as a virtue. However, changes in social structure and value system hinder individuals from being authentic. This study reviewed various conceptualizations of authenticity and conflicting views on authenticity: Authenticity is viewed as (a) an individual-differences variable, (b) a relational construct, and (c) some amalgam of the two. Also, the present study introduced diverse studies on the issue of authenticity including the development of measurement tools, its relationships with other psychological variables, factors affecting authenticity, and its positive functioning. Its implications for counseling practice and future directions for research are discussed.
