    The purpose of the study is to clarify conceptually the difference of instruction and teaching in Korean so that educational technologists would not use interchangeably teaching and instruction, teaching theory and instructional theory, and instructional design theory. Teaching and instruction, instructional theory, instructional design theory have been mixed up by educational technologists in Korea, though those are the core concepts of educational technology. The mix of teaching and instruction cause the mixed use of instructional design and teaching design, instructional theory and teaching theory, and even instructional design theory. The purpose of the study is to get rid of this mixed use of the terms. The specific study questions were 1) what are the differences in teaching and instruction? 2) What are the components, conditions, and characteristics of instructional theory? 3) How can instructional theory and instructional design theory be differentiated? Based on reviewing various existing studies, the followings were concluded. Teaching and instruction, one of the core terms of educational technology, are differentiated: teaching is the activity being carried by teachers to facilitate learning, instruction is teaching activities to facilitate learning when time, place, and goals are set. Secondly, an instructional theory can be called when several components and conditions are met, and also can be studies descriptively, though it is prescriptive. Thirdly, instructional theory is about instruction itself to facilitate learning effectively, on the while instructional design theory is about how to design instruction effectively. Since the results of instructional design is a blueprint of an instruction, not instruction itself, instructional design is a part of instructional development. Finally, it was suggested that instructional theory needs to be studied more and field-based in order to advance the educational technology field.
