This study aims to develop a new teaching methodology for teaching traditional Korean dance to foreigners through Labanotation. Labanotation is a movement notation system developed by Rudolf von Laban in the early 20thcentury and is generally considered to be an efficient tool for describing human movement in space and time. This study is intended to design a Korean dance class in which foreigners learn traditional Korean dance, approaching the movements by analyzing and understanding the basic concepts of human movement through the Labanotation theory rather than by solely imitating a Korean teacher`s demonstration of the movements, which are culturally stylized movements, as a whole. In this study, a syllabus for a 10-week Korean dance workshop and corresponding lesson plans were developed for undergraduate and graduate level foreign students, and four of the lesson plans were selected and taught to 10 foreign students in an experimental class. This study took place during the Labanotation Teacher Certification Course held at The Ohio State University in 2004, and the results of the study was based on the feedback from the participants of the experimental class the participants as well as the jurors of the Labanotation Teacher Certification Course. The findings of the study indicated that the Korean dance class that was taught through Labanotation showed very positive value in terms of conveying the information on Korean dance movements to the foreign students very clearly by using the agreed vocabulary and symbols that the Labanotation theory provided. The class also helped students understand the central characteristics of Korean dance, such as the role of breathing in a movement, as the Labanotation concepts specified and spelled out such invisible details of movement on the notation scores. Receiving various information about Korean dance movements on such tangible scores, the students not only understood the kinds of elements that were involved in Korean dance movements, but also perceived the interrelations between the elements in Korean dance. For further studies, this study brought out several suggestions. First, a Korean dance class that is taught through Labanotation must be designed based on the realization that Labanotation is only a vehicle to introduce and teach traditional Korean dance, not a subject to study per se. Second, more Labanotation scores from various genres and styles of Korean dance should be produced in order to introduce various facets of Korean dance. Third, Korean dance classes for foreigners should be systematically designed and arranged through the difficulties orthe complexities of the movement concepts, so the foreign learners can approach Korean dance from various levels with different needs. This study finally suggests that the design of a Korean dance class for foreigners must begin with a clear understanding of the objective of the class before developing a teaching methodology in order to fertilize as well as to maximize the foreigners` experience in Korean dance.
