비교방법의 방법론적 정체성

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The goal of comparative method is to explain both complexity and generality inherent in phenomena. Assuming that units of analysis are homogeneous, however, statistical method is aimed at explaining generality. To the contrary, comparative case study argues that characteristics of units of analysis are bound to change depending upon the spacio-temporal contexts. Complexities are the ones comparative case study deals with. In order to cover both complexity and generality, comparative method had better select the units of analysis parts of which share universal characteristics although rest of them remain unique depending upon the spacio-temporal context of each case. Methodologically, comparative method is a good method of social science when both dependent variable and independent variable(s) are affected by the spacio-temporal contexts, which defies unbiased and efficient estimation in statistical analysis. Institution is a relevant unit of analysis in comparative method. This is because various socio-political institutions have been formed in the transition to modernity in which the universal characteristics of modernity were embedded with the socio-cultural characteristics of communities. Finally, this paper discusses how the existing studies of 'diversities of capitalism' can be improved when employing the comparative method this paper suggests.
