경제지리학 네트워크 연구의 이론적 고찰 - SNA와 ANT를 중심으로 = A Review of Researches on Networks in Economic Geography: SNA and ANT

“Network” became one of the key issues in various fields of study. This paper focused on the review of researches on the networks in economic geography. Recently, with regard to the study of the network, there are two approaches, namely, the network governance approach and the social network approach. In this study, at first, forms of networks and network topology were explained based on the network governance approach. Then, SNA(social network analysis) and ANT(actor network theory) were reviewed as new approaches and methodologies of the network analysis in economic geography. SNA was mainly introduced in economic geography as the analytic tool for understanding the network structure focused on the characteristics of individual actors. Meanwhile, ANT was interested in the action and the
process of the network formation between multiple heterogeneous actors by the exercising of power. These two methodologies are related to the ‘cultural turn’ of new economic geography. With the increasing interest in the complexity and the evolutionary perspective, a wide range of network researches are needed in economic geography.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 여러 학문분야에서 중요한 연구 대상이 된 네트워크를 경제지리학의
연구를 중심으로 살펴본 것이다. 경제지리학에서 네트워크는 연구대상과 범위가
매우 다양하지만, 최근의 연구경향은 크게 네트워크 거버넌스 접근과 사회 네트
워크 접근의 두 가지로 나누어볼 수 있다. 먼저 네트워크 거버넌스 접근에서 논
의되어온 네트워크의 형태와 유형을 살펴본 후, 새로운 접근으로 모색되고 있는
SNA(사회 네트워크 분석)와 ANT(행위자 네트워크 이론)에 대해 고찰했다. 경제
지리학에서 SNA는 개별 행위자의 특성에 초점을 두면서 네트워크의 구조를 분
석하기 위한 분석 툴로서 도입된 경향이 강하다. 이에 비해 ANT는 네트워크의
구조가 형성된 프로세스에 관심을 가지면서, 사람과 사물 등 여러 이질적 행위자
의 실행에 의해 파워가 형성되는 과정에 관심을 두었다. SNA와 ANT는 경제지
리학의 문화적 전환과 관련되어 있으며, 경제지리학의 진화론적 접근으로 연결된
다. 경제지리학 네트워크 연구에서 다양한 방법론의 도입과 적용을 통해, 네트워
크의 다차원성이나 복잡성의 증가에 관심을 가지고 더 많은 연구와 분석이 이루
어져야 할 것이다.
