    Fish species were determined by analysing the morphology of nine otolith samples recovered from four shell middens ─ Oido (Neolithic Period), Namjeon (Proto-Three Kingdom Period), Yondaedo (Goryeo Dynasty) and Gado A (Baekje Period) ─ and from a shell layer from the Oryu-dong site (Modern). The nine otolith samples were identified as follows: 1 sample from Yondaedo came from the Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus); 1 sample from Gado came from the white flower croaker (Nibea albiflora); 7 samples (one from Oido, one from Yondaedo,one from Oryu-dong and four from Namjeon) came from the small yellow croaker (Pseudosciaena polyactis;). Growth increments of the four fish otolith samples of the small yellow croaker recovered from Oido, Namjeon, Yondaedo and Oryu-dong sites, respectively,were examined to determine the seasonality of fishing and site occupation. The otolith samples were sectioned to examine growth increments and the marginal index of the samples was calculated. The growth increments located at the edge of the archaeological samples, which were deposited at the time of fish capture, show wide opaque bands corresponding to the fast growth season. Based on the monthly variation of the marginal index of modern specimens, it can be inferred that fishing at the Yondaedo site occurred in June-July; at the other three sites located on the western coast, fishing occurred in the summer-fall. Apart from the three sites which belong to the later period and were possibly occupied all year round, it can be assumed that the Neolithic Oido site was exploited at least intermittently for fishing in the summer-fall.
