남한내륙 중기신석기시대 토기문양의 공간적 분포양상 = Spatial Distribution of Pottery Designs during the South Korean Middle Neolithic

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Montelian typological ordering of pottery designs has been the major methods for South Korean Neolithic chronology. This paper questions the validity of untested logic and assumptions of typological approach, and proposes that spatial distribution of pottery designs which has more testability be understood first in that variations in pottery design may actually represent spatial aspects. The Bongyeri style and Double Rim style pottery which seem to represent temporal aspects being excluded, the distribution of Middle Neolithic ceramic designs appears to be clinal, despite location-specific diversity. Thus, it is hypothesized that accultuation is the best model to explain this spatial pattern. Seriation using multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) is adopted to test this hypothesis. Analyis shows that Middle Neolithic ceramic assemblages are ordered according to geographical locations, evidencing that diversity in ceramic assemblage composition is the result of spatial variation during acculturation and interaction process.
