A picture of shaman’s god is a visualized version of gods worshipped in shamanism. In other words, shamanism is a cradle of pictures of shamans’ gods. This correlativity, therefore, makes possible to use pictures of shamans' Gods for the study of shamanism.
In the ‘picture of gods of the sun and of the moon’, there are two male gods and two circles above their heads as symbols of the Sun and the Moon. This feature tells us that it is quite probable that those are the same gods in myths of creation of the world such as ‘Bepodoupchim’ sung at the big rituals of shaman exorcism. As for ‘Bepodoupchim’, its content is well preserved in the shamanism of Jeju Island and we can find its traces in mainland through shaman songs.
Bepodoupchim’ is our myth of creation of the world, as it explains the beginning of the world and the process of establishment of order. In ‘Bepodoupchim’, there had been originally two suns and two moons in the world. The gods of the sun and of the moon, twin brothers of the king of the world killed the other sun and moon with iron arrows, giving a great favour to the mankind by controlling the number of suns and moons.
The pictures of shamans’ gods are highly valuable cultural assets because they show what the myths say. We can analogize through ‘the picture of gods of the sun and of the moon’ that those gods were considered as male and that the full moon was favoured as the best of all moon shapes and that a long face with small eyes, voluminous chin and big ears was understood as a good facial look.
