서양 연금술에 대한 융의 종교철학적 고찰 = A Study on the Alchemy from a perspective of Jung's Philosophy of Religion

국문 초록 (Abstract)

서양 연금술은 기원전 2-3세기 경 헬레니즘 사회에서 시작되어 17세기에 이르기까지 발전했는데, 분석심리학자 C.G.융은 진정한 연금술사들은 흔히 알려진 것처럼 물질로서의 금을 얻으려고 했던 것이 아니라 물질 속에 있는 세계의 혼(anima mundi)을 추출하여 물질을 구원하려고 했던 정신작업이었다고 주장하였다. 그것은 연금술의 비방(秘方)에 나타난 물질들이 실제의 그 물질을 가리키는 것이 아니라 상징들인 것을 보면 잘 알 수 있다. 연금술사들은 각각의 물질에 그들의 무의식을 투사하여 물질로서의 금이 아니라 현자의 돌을 얻으려고 했던 것이다. 융은 연금술에 나타난 상징들이 그가 정신과 환자들과 했던 정신치료 작업과 많은 부분에서 일치한다는 사실을 발견하였고, 연금술사들이 얻으려고 했던 금인 현자의 돌은 정신치료 과정에서 궁극적으로 얻어지는 자기(self)의 투사임을 확인하였다. 연금술은 자연과학이라는 옷을 입고 있지만, 사실은 전인(全人)에 도달하려는 인류의 노력이 중세라는 시대에 보호막을 입고 나타난 것이라고 주장했던 것이다. 그것은 연금술에 사용되는 여러 가지 상징이나 연금술의 과정이 많은 부분에서 융이 말하는 정신치료 과정인 개성화 과정과 유비적인 관계에 있는 것을 보면 알 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The western alchemy began with the background of Greek philosophy and Egyptian techniques in the Hellenistic world of the 2-3 century BC. The Greek philosophy was interested in the examination of the essence of materials, whereas the Egyptian pursued the immortality of human being making mummies. The alchemy developed by mixing these two together. The alchemists worked with strong confidence, and they initiated very few people into the mysteries. The alchemy has been known, in general, as an occult art which makes an elixir of life or gold by some plain metals. But Analytical Psychologist C.G. Jung convinced that the work of alchemy didn’t aim to get gold but to reach the totality of the psyche. As the materials used in the alchemy didn’t indicate that materials as such but they were the symbols which the alchemists projected.
The alchemists thought that the Christianity is so standardized and obsessed with its tenet that it cannot satisfy the internalized unconscious desire of human beings, especially the introverted ones. They believed they would be able to observe a mysterious metamorphosis if they project these internal process onto a substance. Therefore, for them, a substance was not merely an inanimate thing but a living creature with a soul, and the essence of these subjects was gold. For this reason, C.G. Jung said the work of alchemy can liberate the anima mundi and save the world of material.
The very last phase of the alchemy is the lapis philosophorum that is also called as the filius philosophorum, homo primordial, anthropos. The alchemists called them like this as they wanted to highlight all significances in these names. The individuation process, which C.G. Jung thought as the goal of all psyche, is to actualize the Self which is the most powerful archetype in the collective unconscious. It is also a way to reach totality of psyche, and it has been tried for thousands of years through numerous symbols, and the alchemy is one of them.
