It was in the middle of nineteen-ninetieth that the so-called ‘Nonsul’ (special type of essay for college and university entrance examination) was adopted as one of the college entrance examinations. The background reason of the this adoption was caused from the powerful conflict between the government and major universities concerning the governance of college student selection. Neither the name, the concept, nor the written discourse type of ‘Nonsul’ had not yet academically established at that time. As a natural consequence, there were quite big confusions among the high school students, their teachers and parent, who were deeply related with the college entrance examinations in Korea. At the early period of Nonsul examination, the college and university professors, who were involved in the Nonsul examination, mainly selected the essay theme from the current issues of media. Student and teachers were quite naturally began to read the articles about the current major issues. Meantime by relizing that the current issues were not regarded as a good Nonsul theme, professors turned their attention to the classical texts, and selected Nonsul themes from the theme of the texts. It was asked for students to read one or two classical articles, summarize the main theme(s) of articles, find the common themes/topics among the texts, and write his/her own thoughts about the common topics. The concept, and the thematic content of Nonsul again changed from classical texts to various contemporary texts that were not beyond the limit of high school curriculum. It was a usual trend at that time that, in the Nonsul examination, students were asked to read, understand, summarize, find common theme, and write 4-6 middle-length articles of which contents were about either liberal arts, literature(poem or novel), social studies, or science. This new concept of Nonsul were developed and suggested by Seoul national university, in order to normalize the high school education in Korea. Nonsul examination changed more and more, and the most current Nonsul examination, students are asked to read several curriculum-related different articles, and answer 2-3 questions. These questions are generally very difficult and complex because of the inter-curricula contents. As we see from the above, Nonsul have changed a lot from the early appearance to till now. But the concept of, the ways to select and organize the content, and the written discourse types are still under way. Nonsul is still expected to evolve more and more, toward the two directions, one is to normalize the high school education, and the other is to upgrade its evaluation tools.
