With the social turn in second language acquisition research, close attention has been paid to the sociocultutal and historical situations in which learners are located. Drawing on the concepts of practice of communities, and imagined identities proposed from the sociocultural and poststructural perspectives, studies on learner identity have shown that second language learners participate in constructing, resisting, and negotiating multiple, contesting identities in the second language learning process. Identity studies have also asserted that the level of second language motivation is contingent on the possibility and the degrees of participation in the learner``s imagined identities. The paper is to overview relevant literature on learner identity to understand key issues, and to make suggestions for future research.
