진보적 자유주의를 위한 변론 : 급진 자유주의의 시각에서 = An Apology for a Progressive Liberalism -From a Viewpoint of Radical Liberalism

국문 초록 (Abstract)

신자유주의의 전횡이 초래한 전 지구적 재앙 앞에서 자유주의는 더 이상 인기있는 이름이 되지 못한다. 그러나 나는 이런 상황이야말로 자유주의에 대한 급진적 성찰을 요구한다고 본다. 신자유주의의 大실패조차도 자유주의 이론과 실천의 풍부한 함축을 소진시킬 수 없기 때문이다. 신자유주의의 발호 이전에도 한국사회에서 자유주의는 호의적으로 받아들여지지 않았다. 한국현대사에서 한국보수가 이끈 자유민주주의는 냉전반공주의와 천민자본주의를 착종된 형태로 실행함으로써 자유주의를 왜곡하거나 파괴했다. 한국진보는 자유주의의 힘을 과소평가하거나 자유주의 자체를 송두리째 적대시함으로써 진보운동의 진보성 자체를 공허한 것으로 만들었다. 결국 한국의 보수와 진보는 공히 자유주의가 갖는 중요성을 제대로 이해하지 못했다. 이 글은 첫째, 이런 문제를 교정하는 치료적 효과를 겨냥하며 둘째, 진보적 자유주의가 21세기 한국에서 강력한 진보적 함축을 갖는다는 점을 급진자유주의의 이름으로 주장하려 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The on-going global economic debacle, mainly caused by the arrogant dominance of Neoliberalism, has made the name of Liberalism itself unpopular. I, however, believe that this situation drives us to throughly reflect upon Liberalism in general, since even Neoliberalism's catastrophe can't completely destroy the significance of Liberalism's theory and practice.
In retrospect, Liberalism has never been accepted as a popular positive virtue in Korea even before the rise of Neoliberalism. Liberal Democracy led by the Korean Conservatives has been nothing but the mixture of a cold-war era anticommunism and savage capitalism. On the part of Korean Progressives, they have been antagonistic to Liberalism or have underestimated it, thereby have made the contents of their progressive doctrines vacuous. All in all, both of Korean Conservatives and Progressives have never fully understood nor properly appreciated the importance of Liberalism.
This article, firstly, aims at rectifying these grave flaws. Secondly, I'd like to demonstrate, under the name of Radical Liberalism, that a progressive version of Liberalism has a powerful practical potential in 21st Korean society.
